The pair loaded a suitcase with clothes to steal at Matalan, on Newport Road, Cardiff, on February 12.

Mike Evans, prosecuting, said: 'Both defendants saw they were being watched by staff and decided to abandon their enterprise.'

The heroin-addicted siblings left the clothes and fled but were caught by police.

Laura Kibble, defending, said they aborted their plans because they had 'a change of heart', and not because they had been caught.

She said: 'Mr Vickery says he thought about his daughter and decided not to steal.'

Christina Vickery must undergo a 12-month supervision order, complete 80 hours of unpaid work and pay pounds 60 costs. Her brother was given a four-month suspended prison sentence, a 12- month supervision order and must pay pounds 60 costs. Magistrate David Cargill said Mr Vickery's sentence was necessary because of his 'prolific offending'.
