KFC, Geico Run YouTube Videos in Ads

May 20, 2007

Yum Brands Inc.'s Kentucky Friend Chicken fast-food chain has created U.S. TV commercials made with YouTube and other sharing-sites videos, the company says.

The commercials, to start airing on American Idol Tuesday, include snippets of Web videos showing people ostensibly celebrating the chain's new menu of chicken with no trans fats, the company says.

The people -- pumping fists, jumping for joy and generally going bonkers -- are not really reacting to the new menu, USA Today reported.

Hasan Robinson, 27, of Kansas City, Mo. -- shown doing a flip -- is, in fact, a vegetarian.

I don't care. I was so excited, he said about being in a chicken ad.

The chain did find a KFC fan in Ricardo Skratch Charles of London. He is seen in the commercial's closing shot blowing out candles placed in a KFC bucket.

Separately, car-insurance company Geico has begun running commercials poking fun at the goofy video craze.

They show video silliness such as jousting with mattresses and suggest consumers could spend their time more profitably by going to Geico.com and getting a rate quote for cheaper insurance, USA Today said.
