Insurance Backtrack

Jun 17, 2007

It sounded like a good idea when legislators passed the law in 2004: Motorists who canceled their insurance would get a letter from the secretary of state's office notifying them that driving without insurance is against the law. Instead of cracking down on uninsured motorists, however, the law meant hundreds of thousands of law- abiding citizens got the letters, often simply because they had switched insurance carriers or traded their vehicle. Finally, the Legislature is poised to correct th...

Some Welcome Numbers for New Jersey

Jun 12, 2007

By JAMES AHEARN NEW JERSEY is the top, or darn close. I have some numbers here that prove it. Take automobile insurance. New Jersey drivers spend more on car insurance than drivers in any other state, an average of nearly $1,100 a year. Granted, this is not a distinction we should brag about. All right then, take public-school funding. If dollars spent were proportionate to results achieved, we would be justly proud, a community of world-class scholars. Spending per student is higher in N...

Not the Answer

Jun 12, 2007

Compulsory car insurance doesn't work well in Britain. Those with no respect for the law simply don't insure their cars and law- abiding youngsters find that their insurance costs far more than the purchase price of their first car. Insurance works by spreading the cost of accidents across all the policy holders so you can be sure that forcing youngsters to insure will increase all our premiums.
